Abstract Background

[CGHM WHITE PAPER]
Latest Hydrogen Projects in MENA

Hydrogen deployment consistent with a 1.5ºC-aligned pathway will require an annual investment of around USD 60-130 billion through to 2030, relative to the less than USD 1 billion invested annually, on average, over the past decade, says a recent IEA report. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region could emerge as the largest supplier of green and low-carbon hydrogen to the world blessed by its abundance in natural gas and huge potential in renewables – with currently more than 1,500 wind and photovoltaic projects in the MENA region totaling 20 GW of installed capacity and more to expect in the coming years.

As of December 2022, close to 63 green and low-carbon hydrogen projects are planned in the MENA region. This includes projects of which the end product is ammonia. Egypt is to date the top-performed MENA country in terms of hydrogen development, holding a total number of 18 projects partly bolstered by the commencement of the UN COP27 Summit. Ranking in descending order, the United Arab Emirates takes the second place with a total of 14 hydrogen projects, followed by Oman in the third with a total number of 11, Morocco and Turkey in the forth place with 5 each, and Saudi Arabia in the fifth with a number of 3.
